The painting workshop
To learn
your vocabulary, look at the images of our workshops and try to remember the
English word. Check whether you are right by rolling over the picture with
your mouse. By clicking on the speaker symbols you get an audio file to learn
the correct pronunciation. Audio introduction:
Your tasks:
1) Produce a workshop report for an English broadcasting company:
They want to introduce the apprenticeships young people can do in our region
in their main radio programme on Europe. You have been asked to do a report
on your typical day in the workshop. Prepare your text by using the new words,
and then use the podcast programme "Audacity" for recording your
report. Add some music you find suitable. You can also do an interview with
one of the teachers or your fellow students. Ask them to do it in English,
or translate their German statements into English. Put your mp3 file into
the Glass Classroom. If you
don't know Audacity yet, here you can get help: tips
how to create a podcast.
2) Visit this online
glass painting course and comment on the different techniques:
Which ones do you know from your classes? Explain similarities as well as
differences. Perhaps there is something you did not yet know of. What is new
for you? Post your opinion to the stained glass painting course in the learning
weblog: http://www.glasfachschule.wordpress.com
If you don't know how to express opinion, use the
following worksheet.
3) Visit the school of glass at the Museum of Glass at Tacoma, USA, and take a look at the list of basic chemistry for working with glass. You'll find it at the left navigation bar under science and glass. As you already know all about it in German, translate this English overview. Work in teams. Each team takes one short text, Team 1: The Sand, Team 2: The Flux-Soda & Lime, Team 3: The Trace Ingredients, Team 4: Finding Agents and Decolorants, Team 5: What's the big deal with lead chrystal?, Team 6: Colorants, Team 7: Speciality Glasses, Team 8: Coefficient of Expansion. Every team should also translate the introduction! Please write down the key vocabulary of your paragraph and collect it in the Glass Classroom, as well as your translation, so that it is available for everyone in class.
